President says he has decided to take over economy from UNP

President Maithripala Sirisena says he has decided to take over the economy from the United National Party (UNP).

The President said that the handling of the national economy was in the hands of the UNP over the past two years.

However he says from this year the economy will be his responsibility.

The President said that the economy was under severe strain over the past three years.

“From this year I will be taking the leadership on managing the national economy,” the President said.

The President expressed these views at a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) election rally in Kegalle today.

Sirisena said that he will look to bring down the cost of living and also protect local investors.

He urged local investors to put their money on Sri Lanka and not overseas and assured them his fullest support.

The President also said that in the Central Bank treasury bond scam, those accused are attempting to wash their hands.
