Hambantota port workers suspend strike following talks

Workers attached to the Hambantota port today suspend a hunger strike following talks with the authorities.

The workers had been protesting against a deal reached between a Chinese company and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to operate the Hambantota port.

The protest fast was launched on January 9 demanding that the 438 employees of the Magampura Port be recruited by the Ports Authority or that they be compensated sufficiently.

The workers said that they had suspended their strike as they received a favorable response to their concerns from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. (Colombo Gazette)
