SLFP, joint opposition and JVP want Parliament debate on bond report

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the joint opposition and the?Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have called for a debate in Parliament on the report of the President Commission which investigated the alleged treasury bond scam.

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday assured tough action after the Presidential commission recommended steps be taken against former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, former?Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran and?Perpetual Treasuries head?Arjun Aloysius.

He said that the public suffered a loss of?Rs. 11.5 billion as a result of the?treasury bond deal.

The President had also said that?Perpetual Treasuries had made profits over?11,145 million.

?I would like to specifically state here that I would not hesitate to take steps to recover the loss of Rs 11,145 million and take legal action against the offenders and punish them,? the President said.

He said that the report has already been sent to the Attorney General to take legal action.?(Colombo Gazette)

The son of former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was arrested today for drunk driving. The police said he was later released on police bail. Last week?Ramith Rambukwella, son of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, was also arrested over a road accident. The police said that?Rambukwella was arrested over an accident which took place at Independence Avenue in Colombo and that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the arrest. Navy sailor found dead inside Colombo hotel

A Navy sailor was found dead in a Colombo hotel today, the police media unit said. The police said they suspect the sailor had committed suicide. Last week the?police began investigations into an?alleged suicide of a Navy sailor attached to the Trincomalee Navy camp. According to the police the sailor is said to have shot himself in the camp. The sailor was identified as 36 year old Anura Nishantha Kumara, a resident of Kandy. (Colombo Gazette)
