UNP backs implementing recommendations of commission

The United National Party (UNP) says it backs implementing the recommendations in the report by the Presidential commission investigating the treasury bond scam.

UNP member of Parliament Ajith P. Perera told the BBC Sinhala service that the report clears allegations raised against Prime Minister and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the scam.

He said the UNP also backs the recommendation that legal action be taken against former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Perpetual Treasuries head Arjun Aloysius.

President Maithripala Sirisena, in a special statement earlier, said that the commission report refers to the allegation against former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake regarding the payment of rent for the penthouse apartment belongs to the Aloysius Family and their Walt and Rowe Company and stated that Karunanayake was responsible for that and recommended that the Government should to take necessary action against Karunanayake under the section of bribery and corruption and further legal action under the penal codes for giving false evidence at the Commission.

The report recommends that, the legal action against relevant persons and officials who are responsible for the fraud including Perpetual Treasuries Limited, Arjun Aloysius and Kasun Palihena be taken. Accordingly, the President had said the Government is in consultation with the legal authorities. (Colombo Gazette)
