Police fire tear gas and water cannons on protest

The Police fired tear gas and water cannons on university students protesting in Fort this evening. The students blocked the main road and protested forcing the Police to fire water cannons and tear gas to disperse them. However the university students returned and blocked the main road again near the Hilton Hotel and protested. The Police fired another round of tear gas and dispersed the protesters. The Police said that 26 students were later arrested for unruly behavior during the protest.

HRCSL establishes unit to probe human rights violations during polls

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has established a unit to investigate allegations of Human Rights violations by Government officials in the context of the 2019 Presidential Election.
