Minister insists there was no attempt to protect Vithya’s killers

Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorale today insisted that there was no attempt made to protect the killers of Jaffna school girl?Sivaloganathan Vithya.

Atukorale said that a Government Minister had only attempted to ensure a key suspect, who had been held by the public following the murder, was released and handed over to the Police.

She said that if the suspect was not handed over to the Police he would have been killed by the public and proper justice would not have been served.

Vithya was abducted and raped in 2015 before she was killed.

In September this year seven accused over the rape and murder were sentenced to death by a trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court.

Among those sentenced to death was the main suspect identified as Swiss Kumar. (Colombo Gazette)

Polling to be conducted in quarantine centers

Polling will be conducted in quarantine centers, if required, at the upcoming Parliamentary election. Sri Lankans returning to the country are sent to quarantine centers, mostly operated by the military, to be quarantined for 14 days. A final decision on the new date for the Parliamentary elections has been delayed. The National Elections Commission met today to discuss the new date but decided to further delay the decision.
