Probe launched into use of funds by MP for rebel cemetery

An investigation has been launched into the use of funds from the decentralized budget to renovate a cemetery for slain rebels.

State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera said that the investigation was launched following reports that Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian S. Sridharan had allocated Rs.4 million out of his decentralized budget to renovate the LTTE cemetery in Kilinochchi.

Perera said that it was reported that the allocation of the funds had been approved at the Kilinochchi District Development Committee meeting.

He said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had been informed of the move and an investigation has now been launched.

Niroshan Perera said that there are certain guidelines which need to be followed when utilising funds from the decentralized budget.

He said that if renovation work of the LTTE cemetery in Kilinochchi has begun using the funds from the decentralized budget then the work will be suspended. (Colombo Gazette)
