Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today asserted that protecting human rights will be given priority by the Government.
Speaking after releasing the National Human Rights Action Plan for 2017-2021, the Prime Minister said that the unity Government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena is determined to uphold human rights.
He said that while there were human rights concerns in the past, after the new Government took office in 2015 steps were taken to protect human rights.
However the Prime Minister said that some media only focus on politics when reporting on human rights.
He said the media forget that journalists were killed or assaulted in the past and some had to flee the country. (Colombo Gazette)
