Speaker says will not approve Constitution detrimental to Sri Lanka

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today assured he will not approve a new Constitution detrimental to Sri Lanka to be passed.

The Speaker said that while several views and opinions have been expressed with regards to a new Constitution, a final draft has not be submitted.

He said that as long as he is the Speaker of Parliament he will not allow a Constitution which is harmful to the country, Buddhism or any other religion to be passed.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya expressed these views at an event held in Mirigama today, the Speaker’s office said.

A heated debate is currently taking place in the country over moves to draft a new Constitution, with some Buddhist monks claiming the new Constitution will harm Buddhism.

The Speaker however said that there was no need for anyone to be concerned as a final draft for a new Constitution has not yet been presented. (Colombo Gazette)

    Why mix religion with politics. Religious leaders of no religion is elected or appointed to govern the country but politicians. Even in this imperfect system the will of the parliament is the will of the people.

    Create a constitution that guarantees individual rights, does not favor or discriminate against anyone based on religion or language creating a strong environment for the judiciary and rule of law.

    Religions can do what they want based on their beliefs as long as it is not against the law of the land. This should prevent Buddhists ordaining children and Muslims treating women as second class citizens. No religion should have special privileges or be above the law.
