The Transport Ministry has proposed that the import of three-wheelers to Sri Lanka be reduced.
Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament that there are too many three-wheelers on Sri Lankan roads.
“There are over three million three-wheelers in Sri Lanka,” the Minister said.
He said that three-wheelers have been a cause for traffic congestion and accidents so he has urged the Finance Ministry to consider moves to discourage importing three-wheelers.
The Minister also said that new laws will be introduced to ensure no one below the age of 35 can operate a three-wheeler on hire.
Nimal Siripala de Silva said that public transport in Sri Lanka will see an overhaul to give a better service.
As part of the process, he said Sri Lanka will look to import electric passenger buses in future. (Colombo Gazette)
