The protesters who clashed with the Police in Hambantota yesterday, have been remanded till October 16.
The protesters clashed with the Police during a protest led by the joint opposition. The protest was staged near the Indian Consulate in Hambantota.
The Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters. The Police said that three policemen were injured during the clash.
The Police also said that 28 people arrested following the incident were remanded till October 16.
A restraining order had earlier been issued against the joint opposition from holding the protest in the Hambantota area.
The protest was staged against the agreement reached between the Government with two foreign companies to operate the Hambantota port and airport.
The joint opposition has raised objections to the agreements saying it results in the selling of Government assets to a foreign country.
The Hambantota port is to be operated by a Chinese company while the Mattala Airport will be operated by an Indian company. (Colombo Gazette)
