The Government is to import goats to increase goat meat production in the country, the Government said today.
The Government says with the increase in tourism and less consumption of beef owing to social issues, there is an increase in the demand for goat meat.
However, the Government says local commercial farms are unable to meet the demand for goat meat.
As a result 100 Boer goats will be imported for the Department of Animal Production and Health.
The proposal made by Rural Economic Affairs Minister P. Harrison, to import goats to be handed over to commercial farms to increase the goat meat production, was approved by the cabinet. (Colombo Gazette)
