Government says President’s UN visit a plus for Sri Lanka

The Government says President Maithripala Sirisena’s visit to the United Nations (UN) this year was a plus point for Sri Lanka.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe noted that Sri Lanka had the privilege of addressing the UN General Assembly on the very day US President Donald Trump spoke.

He said the slot Sri Lanka got ensured the international community got an image of the progress taking place in Sri Lanka.

President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the UN General Assembly hours after President Trump spoke last Tuesday.

The Minister said that the international community has begun to recognise the efforts of the Government led by President Maithripala Sirisena.

President Maithripala Sirisena returned to the country today after concluding his visit to New York.

This was the third time that President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the UN General Assembly. In his address to the UN the President apprised the world leaders regarding the policies of the country.

While in the US, President Sirisena and First Lady Jayanthi Sirisena attended a luncheon hosted by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, for Heads of States attending the 72nd UN General Assembly.

President Sirisena also held bilateral talks with Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Thomas A. Shannon and the Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The President also had talks with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Prince Zeid al-Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

He also met with the Sri Lankan community living in the US. (Colombo Gazette)


  1. Yes it is a plus for separatists and betrayers. Attending to a meeting as a henchman cannot do any good to Sri Lanka. For example, J R Jayawardhana changed the attitude of UN people to bring peace to the world. Unfortunately, his follower Ranil is only a clown in political stage so current leaders will not bring any ‘plus’ from Western World. They complained China to get power from Rajapaksa but going back to China again as the Westerners are poorer than Sri Lanka in economic terms.
