Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Pelpita appeal against court ruling

Lawyers appearing for Lalith Weeratunga, secretary to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Telecom Regulatory Commission Chairman Anusha Pelpita today filed an appeal against the recent Colombo High Court ruling which found them guilty in a corruption case.

Weeratunga and Pelpita were found guilty in the ?sil redi? case and were sentenced to three years in jail by the Colombo High Court, and ordered to pay Rs. 2 million each as a fine and Rs. 50 million each as compensation.

They were accused of misappropriating Rs. 620 million of Government funds to distribute ?sil redi?,?cloth used by Buddhist devotees, to voters during the 2015 Presidential elections.?(Colombo Gazette)

Officer shot dead, 6 including 3 children injured in Piliyandala

An officer attached to the Police anti-narcotics unit was killed?and six others, including 3 children were injured in a shooting incident in Piliyandala. The shooting took place near a bank, the police said. The police said that the shooting took place during a raid on heroin dealers in the area. At least three vehicles were also damaged in the shooting carried out by gunmen on a motorcycle. (Colombo Gazette)

Rajitha says no talk of a cabinet reshuffle

Cabinet spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne says there was no talk of a cabinet reshuffle at the cabinet meeting today. Speaking to reporters at the BMICH today,?Senaratne?said that the media had reported that a cabinet?reshuffle was going to be discussed at the cabinet meeting today. However the Minister said that President Maithripala Sirisena did not discuss anything about a cabinet reshuffle today.
