Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today rejected claims by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) that he is scared of some members of Parliament.
The JVP made the accusation against the Speaker after he allowed Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella to clarify a response he had tabled to a question raised from him.
The Speaker had not allowed anyone to give verbal responses to questions raised during the second round of the question and answer session and instead instructed that the responses be tabled.
However, during the second round, Kiriella tabled his response to a question and then sought time to clarify his response, which was allowed by the Speaker.
The JVP raised objections on Kiriella being allowed to make a statement when the others could not do so.
The JVP then accused the Speaker of being scared of some MPs as he had allowed them to speak.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya rejected the allegations and demanded that the JVP withdraw its claims. (Colombo Gazette)
