Speaker rejects claims by JVP he is scared of some MPs

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today rejected claims by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) that he is scared of some members of Parliament.

The JVP made the accusation against the Speaker after he allowed Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella to clarify a response he had tabled to a question raised from him.

The Speaker had not allowed anyone to give verbal responses to questions raised during the second round of the question and answer session and instead instructed that the responses be tabled.

However, during the second round,?Kiriella tabled his response to a question and then sought time to clarify his response, which was allowed by the Speaker.

The JVP raised objections on?Kiriella being allowed to make a statement when the others could not do so.

The JVP then accused the Speaker of being scared of some MPs as he had allowed them to speak.

Speaker?Karu Jayasuriya rejected the allegations and demanded that the JVP withdraw its claims. (Colombo Gazette)

Japan calls for creditor nations’ talks on Sri Lanka debt restructuring

SJB and SLPP rebels decide to boycott budget vote

The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the rebel MPs of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) have decided to boycott the vote on the 2022 interim-budget. The SLPP rebel group consists of 13 MPs who crossed over to the opposition this week.
