Heavy rain, strong winds slam most parts of the country

Heavy rain and strong winds were experienced in most parts of the country today.

The Department of Meteorology said that the prevailing showery condition in the island, particularly in the south western part is expected to continue.

It said that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa Central and North-western provinces. Heavy falls (100-150 mm) are expected at some places, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts today.

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere particularly after 2.00 p.m. Heavy falls (about 100 mm) are expected in some places, particularly in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

The Department of Meteorology said that there may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

SC issues notice on Wigneswaran over NPC resolution for N-E

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued notice on Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran over the?resolution adopted by the Northern Provincial Council recently calling for a federal solution for the North and East. The SC issued the notice based on a petition filed in court against?Wigneswaran and three others.
