The second post mortem on the assassination of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge has found that he was killed by a blunt object.
Athula S. Ranagala, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the family of the late Lasantha Wickrematunge said that the Mount Lavinia Magistrates’ court was informed today there were no signs to prove?Wickrematunge was killed from a gun shot.
The remains of slain newspaper editor Lasantha Wickrematunge were exhumed in September last year to conduct a fresh investigation over his murder.
Wickrematunge, who was the founding editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper, was killed while he was on his way to office.
Popularly known for his investigative journalism and for the stand he took on media freedom, Wickrematunge was believed to have been killed for taking on the then government which was on the verge of defeating the LTTE.
While in 2009 it was believed Wickrematunge was killed from gunshot wounds, investigators later believe he may have died from injuries sustained after a blunt object pierced through his skull. (Colombo Gazette)
