Navy arrests 49 Indian fishermen, 12 fishing trawlers detained

Fast Attack Craft attached to the?Northern Naval Command and Sir Lanka Coast Guard, whilst on routine patrol, arrested 49 Indian fishermen and impounded 12 fishing trawlers for trespassing into Sri Lankan territorial waters and engaging in illegal fishing last night (07, August) and this morning.

Two of the fishing trawlers were impounded in the waters northwest of Delft Island and the rest were taken into custody in the seas north of Kovilan Point.

The fishermen had ventured into Sri Lankan waters and practiced illegal bottom trawling which is considered as a destructive fishing method.

Having brought the arrested trawlers and fishing gear to the naval base SLNS Elara in Kareinagar and fishermen to SLNS Uththara in Kankesanthurei, they were handed over to the Assistant Fisheries Director in Jaffna for further legal action. (Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lanka to purchase 500 buses from Ashok Leyland

Sri Lanka is to purchase 500 buses from Ashok Leyland Company in India, the Government announced today. The Cabinet had granted approval to procure 500 new buses of 32?35 seating capacity for the Sri Lanka Transport Board under the Indian loan grant scheme. Accordingly, bids had been called for from three institutions that met the pre-conditions for the purchase of buses. Rare meeting between Shavendra and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka

A rare meeting took place today between Army Commander General Shavendra Silva and former Army Commander, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka. The face-to-face meeting took place at the funeral of Brigadier Panduka Perera, Commander, 563 Brigade of the Security Force HQ-Wanni.
