Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the release of 42 fishing boats and 75 fishermen from the State by the Sri Lankan Government.
“On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, I thank you for your personal intervention and sincere efforts, which have enabled the release of the fishermen and the boats,” the Chief Minister said in his letter to the PM on Saturday.
Noting that he took up the issue during a recent meeting with Modi in Rameswaram, Mr. Palaniswami requested the Prime Minister to make every effort to secure the release of all the fishermen and their boats that are currently in Sri Lankan custody.
“Even before your departure from Tamil Nadu on July 27, the Government of Tamil Nadu received a communication from the Ministry of External Affairs, regarding the decision of the Government of Sri Lanka to release 42 fishing boats belonging to the fisherman of Tamil Nadu,” he said.
The CM also urged Mr. Modi to instruct the Ministry of External Affairs to secure the release of the remaining 107 fishing boats in Sri Lankan custody.
