Deshapriya calls for urgent meeting on LG polls

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya is to hold an urgent meeting with the secretaries of the political parties with regards to the Local Government (LG) elections.

Deshapriya said?that he has called for the meeting on?August 4?at the Department of Elections.

The joint opposition has been pushing for the LG elections t be held soon and the government has said it is also ready for the election. (Colombo Gazette)

Curfew passes for essential services extended till 31 May

Curfew passes issued for essential services, which were to expire tomorrow (30 April), have been extended till 31 May. Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that some curfew passes issued for essential services are set to expire tomorrow. He said that those curfew passes will not need to be renewed and that they will be valid till 31 May. Ajith Rohana said that the general public will need to obtain curfew passes from the Police to move around. (Colombo Gazette)

Islandwide curfew declared from 8.00pm tomorrow

An islandwide curfew has been declared from 8.00pm tomorrow (Thursday) till Monday 4th May. The curfew in all districts, except in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam districts, will be lifted at 5am tomorrow and reimposed at 8.00pm. However, the curfew will not be relaxed on Friday and instead it will continue till Monday, 4th May. The curfew is expected to be relaxed in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam on 4th May. Over 220 Navy personnel test positive

Three more Navy personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 today. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said a total of? 226 Navy personnel have contracted the coronavirus so far. The Army Commander further said among the infected officers 147 are from the Navy Camp in Welisara. The remaining 79 personnel are those who had gone on leave, he added. (Colombo Gazette)
