Protests in the North over shooting, cop remembered

Protests were staged in the North today over the shooting incident targeting a prominent judge while events were also held in remembrance of the policeman killed in the incident.

Judges, Magistrates and lawyers in the North including Vavuniya and Mannar staged protests over the attack on High Court Judge M. Illanchelian.

Private bus operators in Mannar also protested against the shooting incident while government officers in parts of Jaffna supported the protest.

In Jaffna, university students paid tribute to the policeman killed while giving protection to the judge.

Police Sergeant S. Premachandra was killed when the gunman wrestled with him and removed his weapon and shot him. (Colombo Gazette)

UN Chief, UN Security Council condemn attack on Sri Lankan troops

The UN Secretary-General, Ant?nio Guterres, strongly condemned the attack which led to the deaths of two ?blue helmets? from Sri Lanka and injured six others. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today defended the decision to name United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa as leader of the opposition.
