New campaign launched to contain spread of dengue

A new campaign was launched by the Government to contain the spread of dengue, the Ministry of Health said today.

The national campaign will see the Police, military and public health officials inspecting all areas to identify dengue mosquito breeding grounds.

The number of people affected by dengue has risen to 90,000, the Health Ministry said.

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the government alone cannot fight the spread of dengue and public assistance was required.

He said the government will also implement proposals by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the fight against dengue. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. – Control of mosquito breeding alone is not sufficient to eradicate dengue.
    – The enemy is the dengue virus and not the mosquito.
    – Dengue is actually acquired from a dengue patient, the mosquito only “transports” the virus.
    – Therefore, the correct strategy is to isolate the dengue patient from mosquito bites. 50% isolation will eliminate dengue in 4 months.
