Government looks at forming an alternative GMOA

Moves are underway to form an alternative Government doctors’ association to counter the pressure faced by the government from the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA).

The GMOA has in the recent past launched strikes which has affected activities at all Government hospitals.

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has told President Maithripala Sirisena that Government doctors from the North and East and other parts of the country have backed forming an alternative GMOA, sources said.

Senaratne said that he had discussions with some of the doctors and they did not fully back decisions being taken by the GMOA.

However he says the doctors fear taking decisions which go against the GMOA and so are forced to go with the flow.

Senaratne has urged the President to direct Government members of Parliament to meet Government doctors at district level and obtain their support for an alternative GMOA. (Colombo Gazette)
