New Secretary of Defence assumes duties at MOD

The newly appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kapila Waidyaratne assumed duties following a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence today.

Waidyaratne was accorded a customary welcome upon his arrival to the Ministry and was received by Additional Secretary P.N Panditharatna.

Waidyaratne, a former Deputy Solicitor General was appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence by the President.

In his maiden speech to the Ministry staff he expressed his gratitude to the President for appointing him to the important post and said that he would serve the interest of the country and national security.

He stressed that he takes it as a privilege to be involved in the implementation of the security policy for national security and act to ensure the welfare of the war heroes.

He noted that he would contribute his utmost towards the national reconciliation and sustainable peace programme carried out by the Government.

The Defence Secretary said that even though threats to national security are unavoidable, prior knowledge and preparedness will help overcome such challenges.

He said that he expects the support and unity of all members of the staff to face any challenges. Highlighting the need to maintain the reputation of the Ministry of Defence in the national and international sphere he said that all should work as one in this regard.

Reiterating the need to work in unity he said that this new position as the Secretary Defence will allow him to work with the years of experience in the legal field to ensure lasting peace in the country and take every possible step to ensure national security. (Colombo Gazette)
