Mel Gunasekera murder convict gets death sentence

A man convicted of killing journalist Mel Gunasekera was today sentenced to death.

The death sentence was given by the Colombo High Court.

Gunasekera was killed in her home in February 2014 by a thief who broke in when she was alone.

Gunasekara whose full name is Melicia used a shortened form of it for her byline as Mel.Born in 1973 she was 40 years old at the time of her death. She is an old student of St.Bridget’s Convent in Colombo and a member of the “class of 92” group.

Mel Gunasekara had graduated from the University of East London specialising in Business studies and also had been trained as an accountant.

After working as an assistant editor in the business section at the “Sunday Times”in Colombo she started her own news website. Mel Gunasekara was the founder editor of “Lanka Business online” Sri Lanka’s first economic news portal.

She then worked in the Colombo bureau of Agence France – Presse (AFP) covering Economic and political affairs of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. A great journalist, a multi talented individual, a good friend and above all a decent human being. We are all the poorer for her loss. Glad justice has prevailed but its a hollow victory when we look the life so cruelly cut short.
