Fire in Rajagiriya supermarket causes extensive damage

A major fire at a supermarket in Rajagiriya this morning caused extensive damage to the building.
At least five fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the flames.?The fire was contained by the fire brigades of Kotte and Colombo.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister and Kotte District Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva said that he visited both the scene of the fire and also the fire station in Kotte.
“I praised the fire rescue team for their quick action and posed them the question; what if a fire breaks out on the 25th floor in one of these high rise buildings coming up all across our area, how ready are you to respond? Numerous issues remain to be settled. The main issues being: location, equipment to reach high rises, staff, training etc. I have asked for a full report so we can consider what we can do to be ready for any eventuality,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said the Kotte fire trucks must be placed in a central location instead of the current location at the very corner of the division down a narrow lane after the former location in Nugegoda was converted in to a park.
“I have continued to bring this to the attention of the corrupt-to-the-core SJPK MC, since 2012, but to absolutely no avail. I think the time has come to find an alternative solution to fix the problem before a disaster happens,” he added. (Colombo Gazette)
