Minister says GMOA and President had “secret” meeting

Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne says the Government Medical Officers’s Association (GMOA) had a “secret” meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena.

Senaratne told reporters today that there was no official statement on the meeting held last Saturday as it was not an official discussion.

He says the President had informed the GMOA the meeting on the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) issue is not official and that it is a secret meeting.

The Government had on Sunday ordered the suspension of enrolling students to the SAITM medical campus in Malabe pending a new gazette on SAITM.

Secretary to the President P.B. Abeykoon said in a statement that the new gazette with the terms and conditions on how SAITM will operate in future will be issued soon.

Cabinet yesterday approved a joint cabinet paper on SAITM and the Dr.?Neville Fernando hospital.

The cabinet paper proposes that there are no more talks with the GMOA on the SAITM issue. (Colombo Gazette)

Three Russian scientists fined for collecting rare insects in Sri Lanka
