Sports Minister says Susanthika’s medal belongs to the country

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera says the Olympic medal won by sprinter Susanthika Jayasinghe belongs to the country.

Jayasinghe had said that she wanted to auction the silver medal she won at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as she was facing a financial crisis.

However Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera told reporters today that the medal was won for the country and so it belongs to the country.

Jayasekera said that if Jayasinghe is going to auction the medal then the Sports Ministry is willing to take it.

He said that in future any medal won by National sportsmen and women must be given to the Sports Ministry.

Jayasinghe had accused the Sports Minister of refusing to pay her for the services she rendered to the Ministry.

The Sports Minister however said that Jayasinghe had not reported to work for some time. He also said that the Government treats Jayasinghe like it does other sports stars who brought glory to the country.

Jayasekera said that Susanthika Jayasinghe was given financial support by the former Government and even after he took office yet she never appreciated that support. (Colombo Gazette)
