New programme to reduce obesity among school children

A new programme is to be introduced to reduce obesity among school children, the Government information department said.

About 59% of deaths in Sri Lanka are caused by non-communicable diseases such as heart diseases, diabetics, high blood pressure and cancers and majority of deceased are under the age of 60 years.

As less physical activities are a main cause for these diseases, a proposal made by the Minister of Health Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senarathne, to implement a programme under the recommendations of the Ministry of Education for increasing physical activities among school children and to provide opportunities for school children to consume more healthy meals, has been approved by the cabinet.
