Sri Lanka elected Vice President of the UNGA for 72nd Session

At meeting of the UN General Assembly, Sri Lanka was elected by acclamation to serve as one of the Vice-Presidents of the General Assembly for its 72^nd Session (September 2017 to August 2018) representing the Asia and Pacific Group.

The General Assembly also endorsed the nomination of Miroslav Laj??k, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia, as the President of the General Assembly for the 72^nd Session.

Sri Lanka last served as the Vice President of the General Assembly in 2007 at the 62^nd Session. The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN, Ambassador Rohan Perera will serve as the Vice-President to the General Assembly representing Sri Lanka, during the 72^nd Session. Police arrest 36 boat people

The police arrested 36 people in Ragama last night while they were preparing to travel overseas by boat illegally, the police media unit said today. Posters in Jaffna to be removed

The Department of Elections has ordered the removal of posters and billboards in Jaffna put up in support of candidates contesting the September elections. All police stations in the Jaffna district have been given instructions in this regard, the Jaffna media quoted elections officials in the area as saying. The Jaffna media reported that posters and cut-outs can be seen in several areas targeting the provincial council elections. (Colombo Gazette)
