A landslide destroyed at least 10 shops in Ginigathhena and one person has been reported missing. The landslide followed heavy rain and strong winds experienced in the area and other parts of the country. Landslide alerts have been issued for several areas as heavy rain continues. The public have also been warned of rising water levels of the Kelani river and Kalu (ganga) river.

Navy rescues crew on ship stranded near Galle harbour

The Navy rescued the crew on a ship which was stranded near the Galle harbour following bad weather today. The barge met with an accident as a result of the bad weather and was stuck near the Galle harbour. The Navy rescued nine sailors on the barge and brought them ashore. The ship was abandoned owing to poor weather, the Navy said.

Decision to increase price of bread reversed

A decision taken to increase the price of a loaf of bread has been reversed. The Bakery Owners? Association had announced earlier that the price of a 450g loaf of bread had been increased by Rs 5 from yesterday. However, the Bakery Owners? Association said today that the decision has been reversed and the price of bread will not change.
