Law and Order Minister slams Police over threat to peace

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake today slammed the Police over a spate of incidents which have posed a threat to peace in the country.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister said the Police have a responsibility to safeguard the peace and maintain law and order.

He said the Police had failed to take action on those responsible for breaking the law. The Minister said this concern had been firmly raised with the Police.

“The law is equal to all,” the Minister stressed.

He was responding to concerns raised by Parliamentarian Douglas Devananda and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the incidents targeting minorities.

Ratnayake said that some incidents were however not related to communal or religious hate but were accidents or crime related incidents.

However he said that since the main issue was not addressed other incidents are also put into the same account. (Colombo Gazette)
