The heated exchange broke out after Samaraweera accused Weerawansa of taking his son on a foreign tour on Government expense when Mahinda Rajapaksa was President.
Weerawansa denied the claim and insisted that his son went on the foreign tour on his own expense. He said Samaraweera was making the allegation as he did not have kids of his own.
Samaraweera maintained the allegation and said that the payments for Weerawansa’s foreign trip was approved by former Foreign Minister, Professor G.L Peiris.
He called Weerawansa and some members of the opposition “thakaddiya” which then drew strong reactions from the joint opposition.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya ordered that the word “thakaddiya” be removed from the Minister’s speech.
Some members of the joint opposition then called Samaraweera a “pon**a” and ruling party members objected to the name calling.
The Government told the opposition to be mindful of the language used in Parliament, especially since there were school children in attendance. (Colombo Gazette)
