Mathews happy with selection for UK tour

Sri Lanka cricket captain Angelo Mathews said he was satisfied with the team picked for the ICC Champions trophy to be played in England in June.

Mathews said the team will prepare ahead of the England tour through a training camp in the central town of Kandy.

“I think I have been given the best possible team,” Mathews said after the Sri Lanka cricket board named him captain of the team selected for the tour.

Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya said that Upul Tharanga will be the vice captain on the tour.

He said a 15 member team was selected while two others will be on standby and five others will undergo preparations in Colombo in the event they are required to be sent for the tour at the last minute.

Jayasuriya said the team was selected following several days of discussions which included discussions with the captain.

“The team will undergo a training camp in Kandy and then train further in the UK ahead of the tournament,” he said.

The ICC champions trophy will see all the international cricket teams taking part and battling it out for the trophy.
