Dumping of garbage on UDA land banned from May 1st

The Government has decided to ban the dumping of garbage on land owned by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) from May 1st.

The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development said that the decision was taken as a result of the tragedy which occurred at Meethotamulla.

The Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka said that a decision was taken in 2015 not to dump garbage in Meethotamulla.

However he said several protests were staged against the dumping of garbage in alternative land which was identified for this purpose.

The Minister said a system will now be worked on to handle the garbage collected in Colombo instead of creating more garbage mountains. (Colombo Gazette)
