Ten, including 4 children killed in Meethotamulla tragedy

Ten people, including 4 children, have been killed in the Meethotamulla tragedy.

Over 180 people have also been displaced, officials said today.

Several houses were buried after the Meethotamulla garbage mountain collapsed yesterday, officials said.

Initial reports said that around 100 houses were buried in the incident.

A fire had also broken out at the site and the Air Force was deployed to douse the flames.

President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the Disaster Management Centre to provide assistance to the affected families.

The residents of the area have been protesting over the past several months urging the authorities to move the garbage to another location. (Colombo Gazette)
