Three soldiers arrested over Rathupaswala shooting

Three soldiers have been arrested over the Rathupaswala shooting incident, the police said.

The police said that the CID arrested the three soldiers today.?They were produced in court and remanded till April 3.

Violence erupted during a?protest by residents of Rathupaswala on August 01, 2013 as security forces and protesters clashed in Weliweriya, resulting in the death of three persons and over 30 injured.

Human rights groups had condemned the crackdown against the protest by villagers who were demanding clean drinking water for thousands of residents of Weliweriya and have criticised the manner in which authorities had handled the situation.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Council (SLHRC) in 2013 submitted a report on the Rathupaswala incident claiming that the murders were committed by the alleged open air firing at protesters by the Army.

They also recommended the military to investigate into the matter and bring the criminals to book. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy arrest 112 Australia bound persons

Sri Lanka Navy arrested 112 persons illegally bound for Australia in a multi-day trawler today, the Navy media unit said. The trawler named ?Shantha Anthoni-2? with 91 Tamils, 14 Sinhalese and 7 Muslims on board was intercepted by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Western Naval Command off Chilaw.
