Passenger arrested at BIA attempting to smuggle cigarettes

A Sri Lankan passenger (40) has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle in Rs 1.6 million of cigarettes. The suspect, a resident of Negombo, had arrived at the Katunayake airport from Kuwait and in his possession 135 cartons of cigarettes (27,000 sticks) valued at Rs 1,620,000. The detection and arrest was made by Customs officers attached to the BIA. The suspect has been released on a penalty of Rs 25,000 and the cigarette haul being confiscated.

Mangala complains against TV Channel

Minister of Finance, Mangala Samaraweera, has lodged a complaint at the Elections Commission against a private TV channel for distorting a statement made by former Minister A H M Fowzie. In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Elections Commission, Minister Samaraweera says that the TV channel in concern had claimed that former Minister Fowzie had called for the assassination of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Two Nigerians arrested in Peliyagoda with cocaine

Two Nigerians have been arrested in Peliyagoda with cocaine, the Police media unit said. The Police said the suspects were arrested following a raid carried out by the Kelaniya Anti-Vice squad. The Nigerians had in their possession 208 grams of cocaine. Further investigations are underway.
