The NFF had announced recently it is no more part of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and so want to be given recognition as a separate political party in Parliament.
However the Speaker said that the NFF is not an elected political party and so cannot be recognised as a separate political party in Parliament.
Jayasuriya said that while any member of Parliament can sit as an independent MP if they so wish, they cannot be recognised as part of a separate political party.
Weerawansa however demanded that he be given a second hearing over his request. (Colombo Gazette)
