Parliament sittings temporarily suspended following protest

Parliament sittings were temporarily suspended this afternoon as a result of a protest by joint opposition members.

A tense situation arose after Speaker Karu Jayasuriya refused to accept the National Freedom Front as a separate political party in Parliament.

Some members of the joint opposition acted in an unruly manner forcing the Speaker to temporarily suspend sittings. (Colombo Gazette)
