Government wants to first ascertain who are missing

The Government says it wants to first ascertain who are missing and the Missing Persons Office will help in this process.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed Parliament that the Government needs to see if some of those reported missing have gone overseas illegally.

He said that even recently there were reports of several people attempting to travel overseas illegally by boat, some for economic reasons.

The Prime Minister said that once the Missing Persons Office is established a clear picture will emerge on the exact number of those missing.

He said the delay to establish the Missing Persons Office was since some amendments put forward by the JVP was not included.

The Prime Minister said that the amendments have now been gazetted and it will be put to Parliament to be approved.

Wickremesinghe was responding to a question posed by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Why not just ask Gota and avoid all the trouble. With the navy covering almost every inch of the water he must have had a pretty good control of the smuggling operation. It looks the navy had too extra duties assassinations and people smuggling.
