Navy detains 24 Indian fishermen in the Northern seas

The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 24 Indian fishermen who were engaged in illegal fishing practices in Sri Lankan waters, the Navy media unit said today.

Naval personnel onboard two SLN Fast Attack Craft apprehended 9 Indian fishermen along with two trawlers while poaching in the seas Northeast of Delft Island.

Having brought the apprehended fishermen to the Naval Base SLNS Uttara in Kankasanthurai, they were handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Directorate for onward action.

Further, a group of naval personnel onboard 2 FACs attached to the North Central Naval Command arrested 15 more Indian fishermen who were poaching in the seas North of Mannar.

The Navy said that 2 trawlers was also taken into custody during the arrest. The fishermen, fishing gear and other items were produced before the Fisheries Inspector for legal action to be initiated. (Colombo Gazette)
