Wigneswaran notes concerns in talks with UN, EU

Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran today raised his concerns on several issues during talks with the United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU).

The United Nations Resident Coordinator Ms. Una McCauley and EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Tung-Laï Margue held talks with the Northern Province Chief Minister in Jaffna today.

Wigneswaran said that he had told the UN and EU envoys that while some steps have been taken on the post-war reconciliation issue, most of it has not reached the people in the North and East.

He noted that while steps have been taken to establish the Office on Missing Persons (OMP), it has not yet been put into operation.

Wigneswaran told the envoys that if the key issues faced by the Tamils in the North and East are not addressed it could lead to a serious issue.

Tung-Laï Margue said that he discussed the political situation and the needs of the people in the North.

“We need to have the views of the Northern province. We believe there is a window of opportunity that we need to seize,” he said.

Una McCauley said that she also discussed the needs of the people in the North during the meeting with the Northern Province Chief Minister.

She also said that the talks focused on how the UN can work with the Northern Provincial Council to assist the people in the North. (Colombo Gazette)
