TNA backs holding referendum on new Constitution

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says it backs holding a referendum on a new Constitution.

TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran, addressing a meeting today, said that the new Constitution must not suffer like the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

“The new Constitution should not be seen as one which was forced on the Sinhalese people,” he said.

Sumanthiran said that when former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited Sri Lanka, TNA leader R. Sampanthan had told him that if the Sinhalese people do not deliver justice to the Tamils the Tamils will make themselves ungovernable.

“He said we will never return to violence, we will not take up arms again but we will make ourselves ungovernable,” Sumanthiran said.

However he says that statement must not be used to question the commitment of the TNA to the process to draft a new Constitution.

Sumanthiran says the Tamils must be patient and allow the ongoing efforts to address the Tamil issue to move forward and only if that fails should the next step be looked into. (Colombo Gazette)
