Parliament erupts over recognition given to SAITM

A heated exchange of words took place in Parliament today over the recognition given to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said that SAITM was approved by the former Government.

He urged former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to allow SAITM to be given legal recognition.

Rajapaksa said that SAITM can be discussed once the students arrested for protesting over SAITM are freed.

Kiriella however insisted that no one has been arrested in connection to SAITM.

However Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake and joint opposition member Wimal Weerawansa noted that the convener of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) was arrested and is in remand for protesting against SAITM.

Deputy Minister Ajith P.Perera said that the IUSF convener was remanded on a court order and so the Government cannot interfere with a court decision. (Colombo Gazette)
