Government insists no agreement signed for GSP plus

The Government insists it has not signed any agreement with the European Union in order to obtain the EU GSP plus trade concession.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said Sri Lanka has been able secure GSP plus sooner than expected.

However he said some groups are claiming Sri Lanka has agreed to conditions harmful to the country in order to obtain GSP plus.

The Minister asserted that Sri Lanka has not agreed to such conditions, including accepting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights.

The Minister said Sri Lanka has been able to establish good governance and democracy and this has resulted in the European Commission proposing that Sri Lanka be given back GSP plus. (Colombo Gazette)
