The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) and the University Grants Commission today announced long term programmes and the introduction of a new module in universities to promote reconciliation.
ONUR chairperson, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga said that recent incidents at universities in the North, East and South were as a result of some university children being educated in schools which focus purely on one religion.
She said that when children grow up while being segregated from other communities issues arise when they join a university.
Kumaratunga noted that some students stay at university hostels and move around with only one community and this aggravates the issue.
As a result ONUR and the University Grants Commission have decided to work together to promote reconciliation in the university. (Colombo Gazette)
