Over 30 arrested for violating court order and protesting

Over 30 people have been arrested for violating a court order and protesting in Hambantota this morning.

Several?people were injured during a tense situation in Hambantota when protesters defied a court order and staged a protest near the venue of the launch of the Sri Lanka-China Industrial Zone Development Project.

At least 27 people sought treatment at the Hambantota hospital after stones were pelted towards the police and the venue of the project and the police retaliated with water cannons and tear-gas.

The protesters, led by some monks, marched towards the venue of the event which was attended by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other Ministers and diplomats.

A court order was issued yesterday against the protest being staged in the area and the police informed the protesters about this and prevented them from going further.

Most of those arrested over the incident were remanded.?(Colombo Gazette)

Moonesinghe granted bail in Taiwan bank hacking case

Former Litro Gas chairman Shalila Moonesinghe, who was arrested over the hacking of a Taiwanese bank, was granted bail today. Moonesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after US$1.1 million from the Far Eastern International Bank in Taiwan was found in his personal bank account. Far Eastern International Bank was hacked by means of a computer virus and some US$60 million was wired to the accounts of the suspects at a Sri Lanka bank.

US defends ongoing reconciliation process in Sri Lanka

The United States today defended the?reconciliation process underway in Sri Lanka.
