Amaratunga says while he is not against constructing the Christmas tree he is against having it at Galle Face green and holding a carnival around it.
The Minister noted that efforts were taken to maintain the grass at Galle Face green and holding a carnival on the green will damage the grass.
Construction work on the world’s largest Christmas tree at Galle Face resumed last week after being suspended earlier.
Work on the tree came to an abrupt end following objections raised by the Christian and catholic community.
Millions of rupees had already been spent on the project when it was suspended.
However the Government said last week it has resumed work on the tree following talks with the Catholic church.
The Government said the tree was being constructed with private funds and not Government funds. (Colombo Gazette)
